Dreadsnake Mandala

Life is red as a barbecued steak
shared beneath the grape and oak;
dread is long as a diamond snake
the color of grief and smoke.

  1. This scary poem seems like the snake is about to swallow up the setting sun. He come out of the ground from the roots of the oak tree. The oak has deep solid roots but only a spindly body, rather weak compared to the underground underpinnings. Why are the three people out there in such an unwelcoming and forboding setting- trying to have a good time, perhaps ignoring the scary snake, the grief, the smoke. At least one of them sees what is there. Cheryl
